These types of old agricultural prize plaques are beautiful for many reasons – the patina is lovely, the border details are gorgeous, the typography is charming…
This particular piece came from France. It’s a 2nd place prize award from 1956 of an agricultural show in the region of Orne and the town of Domfort in the northwest area of the country. The prize category is for bulls.
The background of the plaque is a deep, rich green that has faded away in some spots to reveal the grey metal. The raised typography has lost its gold color, giving it a wonderful aged patina. There is a hook at the top for hanging although someone decided that wasn’t good enough so they drilled a hole straight through the plaque (see photos).
