These types of old prize plaques are beautiful for many reasons – the patina is lovely, the border details are gorgeous, the typography is charming… I was lucky to find quite a few different prize plaques at a market north of Paris during my most recent trip.
These particular plaques are the first ones I’ve had that were for a dog show. All date back to the 1930s and are issued by Société Canine de Normandie, the Canine Society of Normandy, for the international dog show. The oldest simply states Rouen 1936 as the city and year, while the other three have the date of May 8, 1938 included (also the city of Rouen).
The plaques are smaller than the ones I usually find but they still have all the lovely detail, such as a gold painted border with flourishes at all four corners.
The plaques from 1938 are all in similar condition with some paint flaking off but overall in good shape for being 80 years old. All still have the metal wire loop at the top for hanging. The 1936 plaque has more flaked paint, allowing the dark metal to peek through in spots (see photos).
Please use the drop down menu to select the plaque of your choice – 1936 cream, 1938 blue, or 1938 cream (there are two of these so please let me select one for you).
